In 1855 was born Arthur Melville, Frederick McCubbin and Julius L. Stewart.
In the opening of Exposition Universelle, Paris hosted a massive world's fair featuring major art exhibition, but the jury rejected several works by Gustave CourbetIn defiance, Courbet built his own temporary gallery near the official fair to display his monumental masterpiece "The Painter's Studio" alongside 40 other works. This bold move established Courbet as the leader of the Realist movement, which prioritized raw, everyday contemporary life over idealized classical or historical subjects. Other notable artworks. "Jacob Wrestling with the Angel" by Gustave Dore, "The Studio Before the Auction" by Rudolf von Alt.

In this year art
 was characterized by the rising prominence of Realism in France and the major impact of Pre-Raphaelite and modern-life subjects at exhibitions in Great Britain. The Royal Academy Exhibition was a landmark of vibrant representation of contemporary British life. William Powell Frith's "Ramsgate Sands (Life at the Seaside)" became a sensational success. William Holman Hunt exhibited "The Awakening Conscience", a deeply symbolic Pre-Raphaelite painting addressing Victorian morality. Realism & Expansion: In France, Gustave Courbet began working on his monumental masterpiece, "L'Atelier du peintre" .Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres completed "Joan of Arc at the Coronation of Charles VII".
